Pizza Buns

It was in Jamie Oliver's  Jamie at home book that  I first saw this recipe. He called it the Pizza Bomba, where a pizza dough is  stuffed with a little filling and fried.  In Rachel Allen's Rachel's Everyday Cooking she didn't  fry it but baked them . I decided to bake mine as well .
My little guy calls my version pizza buns, as he says they don't look like balls more like little buns.  This is great recipe to try when you have any left over pizza dough .

Recipe : Pizza buns , inspired by Rachel Allen's Pizza Dough  Balls recipe from her series Rachel Allen's Everyday Kitchen.

For about 12 buns

I used half of a pizza dough recipe

for the filling
2-3 tbsp shop-bought tomato pasta sauce  or use my homemade version
50g mozzarella cheese, cut into cubes
50 g cheddar cheese, grated
125 g pepperoni or luncheon meat cut into small cubes ( or use sausages)
1 egg beaten

Prepare the pizza dough as instructed. once its risen divide it into small balls about 12.

Preheat oven to gas mark 6, 200 degrees celsius.

Make the filling by mixing all filling ingredients except the egg.   Flatten each dough add a heaped teaspoon of filling and then close it up. I made mine a little flat like a mini bun.

Place on a lightly oiled baking sheet or lined baking sheet.  Leave about 2-inch gap between each bun.  Cover with a clean cloth and leave to rise for about 20- 30 minutes.

Brush with beaten egg, and bake for about 30 minutes till they are golden on top.  The cheese will ooze out but that is ok.

Enjoy warm.

Ps: You can use other fillings such as canned tuna and bell peppers, or pieces of leftover chicken and mushrooms etc.

  1. I would also go for the baked version. They look delicious, Nammi.

  2. Looks good. I would stick with a veggie or just plain cheese one since we're vegetarians but I think the family would like them!
