Chocolate Pear Pudding ( Nigella Lawson recipe , adapted)

I kept meaning to try this recipe for ages, ever since I saw her make it on Nigella's Kitchen.  Is it just me but don't you sometimes wonder if she has done some work to her face? I mean take a look at her on Nigella Bites episodes and then her Nigella's Forever Summer series. Not that it matters, but still it is like a question hanging in the back of my mind ....
Personally, I prefer the Nigella in Nigella bites, as she seems more real with the usual hassles of having small kids, minimum make up and all.  In the more recent episodes,  she seems a bit too perfectly done. But then again I love her recipes and most of them are pretty cheap and easy to prepare.

So for this week's IHCC's April Potluck, I am making Nigella's  Chocolate Pear Pudding and I think it makes a good dessert when feeding a crowd or when on a budget.

Serves 4

Recipe: Slightly  Modified version of Nigella's Chocolate Pear Pudding

1 can of Pears ( 820g), drained
65g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp cocoa powder ( level spoon)
65g sugar
75 butter, softened
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla essence
a few tablespoons of milk

Preheat oven to about 200 degrees Celsius, Lightly butter a small cup capacity oven-proof dish. Arrange the pears at the bottom, cut side down.

In a mixing bowl cream the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs and vanilla essence. Sift in flour, baking powder and cocoa together. Mix well. If it looks a little dry ( supposed to be dropping consistency, a bit thicker than cake batter) add a few tablespoons of milk ( mine ended up too thick so I added a a few tablespoons of milk).

Spread it over the pears and bake for 30 - 45 minutes till a skewer or toothpick comes out clean when inserted.  Remove and let it settle for 10 minutes before serving.

I served this as it is but  Nigella served this with chocolate sauce.

  1. Hi Nammi,

I know what you meant. No doubt that as Nigella gets more popular, her images needs more emphasis and perfection...

Nevertheless, I still like her and of course her recipes too. This pear and choco pudding looks awesome!

  2. I don't think you need to really mind that... she is a celebrity after all, she has to take care of her appearance! This pudding sounds and looks delicious...

  4. Hi Nammi,
I suppose she has to keep her "celebrity look", just like all the other celebrity chefs. I love her recipes, especially her chicken recipes!
Your pear pudding cake looks delicious! I have made this ages ago and we really enjoyed this cake a lot! Yums!

  5. Chefs have become celebrities. I wish we have a present-day Julia Child to watch and to cook along. On the other hand, there is no shortage of good recipes out there. Thanks for bringing this one.

  7. Oooo, I made this one ages ago, it's very good. Nice choice for potluck.
We don't have television feed so I have never seen the shows. I love Nigella though, no matter how she looks 😊

  8. I am always impressed by her beauty, but feel that natural looks are usually the best way to go ... and the girl can cook! You picked a great dessert to share!

  9. I've noticed Nigella's looks changing over the years and wondered the same thing. On one hand I feel like it's her right to change herself as she wishes, but I can't help but feel like it's a shame at the same time. She was beautiful way back and didn't need any work done!

Saying that, I do love her recipes and her style of writing recipes. This recipe has been popular on IHCC and I've always wanted to make it. Wish I could steal a bite from the screen.

  10. Nammi, I must say that I have to agree with you that her earlier episodes are more real to me. Perhaps this is the way of making a celebrity chef shine. For me, what matters most is Nigella's cooking. She always make things look so easy peasy and yet, eat it to the extent that it makes me want to lick the screen. I love your chocolate pear pudding!! Anything chocolate with Nigella is an absolute winner :)

  13. It looks delicious! I have been puzzled too, to the point of getting mixed up about who was who, when all along it was the same lady!
