Storing left over tomato paste /puree

I used to buy the the tube type tomato paste which is so much easier than the tinned variety. I use tomato paste occasionally and about a teaspoon or so since I cook for just three of us.

What happens when I store it inside the refrigerator is that it starts to mould. I dont like freezing it, Mainly because i have to defrost my freezer once a week or it ends up looking like its snowed in or something.

I have heard of storing pesto with oil layer on top so I tried it on my tomato paste and it worked!!!. So to store , spoon any left over tomato paste into a small bottle that is completely dry, Not even a drop of water should be there even on the lid!!. Use a small teaspoon the flatten the top and then add a thin later of olive oil on top. Put the lid on tight and store in refrigerator. Make sure the tomato paste stays under the oil.

I use this method for both tomato pastes and purees and home made pestos.

  1. Thanks for the tomato paste tip, I will try it soon.
I try to stay away from trouble makers as much as I possibly can!

  2. This is a great tip! Thanks for sharing - I otherwise always end up throwing away the leftover paste because it expired!
And I hate those busy-bodies too! I'd say, just stay away from them and don't let them get to you. It's easier said than done, but that's the only way you don't drag yourself down to their level!

  3. I do the same thing with tomato paste but I never thought of extending this tip for other sauces!
I understand your feeling , hate people like that too.

  4. Don't like people like, I'd just stay away from them, and not pass repeat the garbage they are trying to stir up! Be better than them, don't stoop to their level. Ignore them! Good luck! Better to vent here!

Great idea with the tomato paste!

  5. no worries we don't mind listening best to just let it go its not worth it and so excited to see your cookbook love rebecca

  6. Thanks for the wonderful tip. Very informative post!!

  7. Hey, great tips! I must try it on my sauce too. Thanks for sharing.
    Cheers, kristy

  9. Wow thanks for the tip! So to use it later, have to drain the oil out?
