Rice with Sausages and Peas

I am a big fan of Gordon Ramsay :) , my hubby calls him the  wrinkly old man but still I think  his programmes are the best. Whether he is screaming at  chefs in Hell's Kitchen or giving people a piece of his mind in Nightmare Kitchens or being extra sweet and nice on Ultimate cookery course, to me,  he  turns out a to be  a great teacher and chef. His ultimate  cookery course is a great book with great recipes and tips although I did wish it had more  illustrations of some of the  methods. This recipe is one I picked up from this book .  I used precooked sausages, not fresh since we don't get fresh over here.

Recipe : Rice with sausages and peas slightly adapted recipe of Gordon Ramsay's Spicy sausage and rice from his book the Ultimate Cookery Course

1 small onion , chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 red bell pepper
1 pkt Gills chicken and garlic sausages , sliced.
1 cup basmathi rice
1/2 cup frozen peas
1 plum tomatoes, chopped
handful coriander leaves chopped
1 tsp smoked paprika ( or regular paprika)
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 tsp chilli flakes
1 green chilli chopped ( optional)
1 chicken stock cube
2 cups hot water
olive oil

1. Heat olive oil, soften onion,  bell pepper and garlic.

2. Once the vegetables are softened, add sausages and stir fry till the meat browns a little, add all the spices. Add rice and stir to coat the rice in the mixture.

3. In a measuring jugs dissolve the stock cube in hot water .Stir this into the rice , season with salt  and cook over a medium high heat, lid off. As the water starts to evaporate from the top, add the peas, tomatoes and coriander leaves and put the lid on , bring the heat to the lowest and cook for 5 minutes.

4. Remove lid after  5 minutes, check if rice is cooked , (add little extra  hot water and put lid back on if not). Switch off and fluff up the rice and serve.

Speaking of fan clubs I have become hooked to this Indian serial that they show on Zee tv. Yes , Indian movies and series are very popular among most Maldivians.I once had a collegue who would  wake up in the middle of the night to watch reruns of her favorite show!!!??!  I am not a big fan of Indian series as they are usually  something based on   some  over dramatized family drama, and the actors are so plastic and over dramatic. This new one, which has been going on for over an year,  is based on Mughal emperor Akbar and his wife Jodha, ( hats off to the actors who play the leading roles, who play a superb job, I mean these two can actually act!!). Now comes my frustration, during a 30 minute show, they actually show only 20 minutes and  the rest of time its all advertisments and they just keep dragging the story with so many twists and turns that it has  given me a head ache!!.  But then again wonder whats going to happen next. So What do you guys watch or like to watch?

  11. I like him too! He can be quite mean though - it's kind of funny at the same time I feel sorry for whoever he's yelling at and thankful it's not me. :-) This looks flavorful and delicious - I never tried any of his recipes.
