Roselle

My nasty cough is back, which means restless sleep and a cranky mood.

Anyway wanted to show something interesting. I have a friend, who lives in a small little house with a tiny space for a garden. But she uses it quite well, or rather her mum and hubby do, to grow necessities like chillies, pandan bushes, moringa and others. Well her hubby came over a few days back with some of her chillies and also brought along this funny-looking flower. When I asked what it was he got all excited and said it's a Ribena flower!!!. Yes, Ribena as in like that black current drink.

So I decided to investigate it, I remembered seeing something called a roselle drink at the supermarkets here and had the same funny-looking thing outside. And guess what? it is the same thing.

It's a type of hibiscus, the calyx of the flower and the calyx is chopped up, after removing the hard green little seed inside, and then boiled in water and sugar and then strained. This is served as a drink with lots of ice. You can check out here for more information on this here

I did try it, but somehow, I really couldn't figure out what's so great about it, yes it does have lots of vitamin C's and other but for me, a good juice should make my taste buds very satisfied, you know like when you have nice watermelon drink or lemonade on a hot day. You know bring a smile to your face.

Does anyone else have any ideas about this roselle? I have read that it can be made into jams and even dried and used for tea.

  1. Really interesting, Peanutts! I've never heard of it and the Wiki article has a lot of great info on it! I'd lean towards trying the jam, it said it tasted similar to plums which is nice! Very pretty color drink and a neat looking flower!

Sorry about your cough, on that page it mentions your flower can be used to make a cough syrup!
